      <image:title>Blog - "The Crux of Our Solitude": On Violence and Cruelty in Latin America - UNTITLED CYANOTYPE 1.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This was the first picture I developed, and one of my favorites because of how clear the negative translated onto the paper. Maybe it's the tightened tendon, the shape of the fingers, the hand grasping at nothing, or a combination of all of these factors, but this picture evokes a sense of helplessness, of grappling senselessly at something which is begging us to let it go. Yet, on the other hand, it somehow also elicits a feeling of resignation, of letting go. This duality interests me. The dome of light around it gives it almost a religious and holy specter. Also, this is our first introduction to the documented body in question. The first contortion of the body which we witness. What are we to make of this? Sit back and watch. Is this a submissive body? Does the simple act of us watching it make it so? Somehow, we begin to form a relationship with the subject simply by watching. It is an interesting dichotomy. We can understand that this body is stressed and moving, but the reason behind it seems unclear. What is this body trying to become? Or rather, being forced to become?</image:caption>
    </image:image>
    <image:image>
      <image:loc>https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/62f660a333f8726f9c149f49/1662493756253-CAM7E622VIZSLI39W4T7/IMG_0401.jpeg</image:loc>
      <image:title>Blog - "The Crux of Our Solitude": On Violence and Cruelty in Latin America - UNTITLED CYANOTYPE 2.</image:title>
      <image:caption>Is the positioning of the arms acting as a form of protection? Or are they simply resigned on top of her, melting into the body? It almost feels as if the viewer is sitting on top of this body, restraining it from further movement. Once again, there exists a relationship between the viewer and the subject. In the first cyanotype, we are restricting action by simply watching. Whereas in this cyanotype, the viewer is less submissive. We are placed on the vantage point of the cruel force that objectifies the subject. We are on top. Additionally, anonymity is threatened in this picture. We can see what appears to be the subject’s neck teasing us with a look at their visage - but on the last second it is denied. Identity is unimportant, and we are driven further from it and into the realm of a physical structure which once was a body to an object. Is it tragedy or reality?</image:caption>

      <image:caption>The fingers are interlaced into each other, but they are so whitened that it is almost impossible to deduce whether they are fingers? Tentacles? Paper straws? A swimming foam noodle? Possibly this cyanotype is the most “objectified” of them all. There is no trace of a body within these fingers, almost impossible to distinguish. The background is simply darkness. What lies behind? Where did the body go? It is just a void. Like a frame without a picture - there exists nothing to hold, to support; and nothing to display. It simply is.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>What I find compelling, almost beautiful, about this cyanotype in particular is the effect that the darker (almost purple) shades on the arm have. They look like bruises. This is a body which has been mangled by some force - these shades remind us of flesh. I am more drawn to the effect that my model’s tattoo has on the viewer and on the meaning behind the project. The subject’s tattoo is the first indication we have of individuality. We are drawn back to reality. We once again begin to understand that this once was a body - now subjected to a cruelty which (due to its inescapability) forces the subject to mutate, to join it in its chrysalis and spit it out - a new form. I think it is interesting how throughout the project so far, the humanity and individuality of the body is always finding ways of communicating despair; and reminds the viewer of its prior form as simply a body.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Looks like it is sticking out of the earth, with all the darkness around it. But it is also this darkness which makes it hard for us to decipher whether this was shot upwards or downwards. I quite liked the indecipherability of this shot. After all, that was one of the aims of my project - this is no longer the body of someone we know. This is an anonymous body. Actually, better yet, this is no longer a body. There are no wrinkles in this foot. It has been smoothed out by some kind of friction. Not unlike a rock in the desert, worn out by the wind as a form of abrasion. All that's left is us trying to figure out what could possibly cause this effect? And, most interestingly, what comes next?</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - "The Crux of Our Solitude": On Violence and Cruelty in Latin America - UNTITLED CYANOTYPE 6.</image:title>
      <image:caption>This picture emanates discomfort. What is the subject trying to do? Are they scratching an itch they can’t quite reach? Are they hurt? This was the cyanotype with the worst exposure. When I developed it under the water I was too rough skinning it to the bottom and the solution made a blurry effect. Interestingly enough, however, it ended up being my favorite one. I liked the effect of the blurriness of the cyanotype, especially considering it against the overall meaning of my project. This body is no longer - it is drifting apart into something unknown to us. We shall never know what it will become, and we shall never see it - and if we do, it is uncertain whether or not we shall recognize it for what it once was.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Blog - "The Crux of Our Solitude": On Violence and Cruelty in Latin America - UNTITLED CYANOTYPE 7.</image:title>
      <image:caption>The final cyanotype and an amusing one. This one came to me quite spontaneously. Cláudia, my model, was resting while I got some materials and lighting ready when she naturally got into this position. I stopped her and took her picture. At first I didn't quite understand what drew me to this position, but after further analysis, I came to understand that it was this strange contrast between her getting into an extremely uncomfortable position to rest. Not unlike my subject matter; where some must succumb to an uncomfortable cruelty and violence - one that modifies their bodies. Nonetheless, once exposed the cyanotype was darker and harder to interpret. Nevertheless, there now was a feeling of being drawn into the body. Somehow, we are in the same dilemma as Untitled Cyanotype 1. There is a relationship between viewer and piece, only this time, it is calling us. Possibly to do something? Or simply to wake up?</image:caption>

      <image:caption>I chose cyanotypes, firstly, because I thoroughly enjoyed doing them and I wanted to challenge myself in terms of production of artwork. I wanted to use a medium that was new to me and be able to experiment with it. I also liked that this medium is unused in my subject area, because it allows for less of a “bias” when it comes to the relationship between the viewer and the work. What I mean by that is my subject is - unbeknown to me - never been represented with such a medium, allowing for new meanings and interpretations to shine through. Nevertheless, I had a bit of a bump on the road when I wasn’t fully sure if cyanotypes would be the best medium to portray my ideas. However, I happened to stumble upon the concept of “architectural cyanotypes' '. The resemblance of these cyanotypes to blueprints in architecture seemed to only strengthen this form/medium in my project. After all, I am talking about the creation - or rather - MANIPULATION of someone into an object. It could almost resemble the usage and manipulation of materials during construction, to turn them into a part of a bigger whole. In this case, my subject is manipulated by their cruel environment to become a part of the bigger whole of narco trade - which is later on glorified. Not unlike the taxidermied animals in H.G. Wells short story “The Triumphs of a Taxidermist”.</image:caption>
