Rethinking Music

The post below will showcase my designs for “Rethinking Music”, along with some information about the process behind these designs and the inspiration I drew from creating them. I will also showcase the description I wrote to accompany the designs.
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND
THE INSPIRATION BEHIND
What I had in mind for Rethinking Music was to reflect the “aliveness” of music. Music’s capacity to light up a room, or completely change one’s mood and even the course of one’s life. In order to achieve this, I knew I wanted the designs to be colourful.
So, I drew inspiration from what would seem like quite an obvious source - Gig / Festival Headline Posters.
I went onto Pinterest and looked at hundreds of posters - from Glastonbury to Leeds, to Coachella and Lollapalooza - all of these posters shared designs that incorporated both colourful illustrations with just the right amount of information (trying to keep the written word at a minimum).
For the Facebook Event Banner, I decided to incorporate the Rolling-Stonesque open mouth. I was drawn to the mouth not only because of its obvious relation to music from its popularization of the British band - but also because the exaggerated quality of it (the lips, the colours, its huge bite and the rainbow tunnel within - an invitation) makes so that, if one tries hard enough, they can almost hear the sound coming out of it.
It is very rock and roll, and that’s why I decided to keep it.
On the other hand, I liked the liquidity of the piano man on the left. For some reason, it reminded me of the jazz genre. It is hard to define, one song holds a million different beats and sounds, and it is wild and free. Both of these drawings shared that feeling of wild freedom under the influence of music that made it so that together (even though they’re quite different) they create an explosion.
Not unlike music itself.
Looking at my finished product, I thought I did a pretty good job at making my vision come to life. Also, upon finishing I realized that, in a way, the theme of Music and the splash of colour of my projects could also reflect the condition of synesthesia. So, in a way, can also be perceived as a direct representation of when the music unites the senses.
The Instagram Post
For the Instagram post, I applied the same thinking that I did with the Facebook banner. I wanted colour, I wanted freedom and fierceness to shine through the design.
I went again with the gape - and this pink man did not disappoint.
Is he the artist or a member of the audience? Is he singing or shouting the lyrics at the top of his lungs?
There is a certain kind of anonymity to this dude, but the thing that is impossible to deny is that he is feeling something. The absolute tamed savagery of the design really drew me in, and so I decided to make him the face of the Instagram post which would announce the circle-session’s theme.
Instagram Story and Event Description
What is music? Is it impossible to define by words alone?
It moves people, not just physically, but emotionally, as well. Not only is it something that we can hear, but music is something that we can feel.
Our souls reach out and touch music, and it touches us in return. It is our universal language. Music knows no borders, cultures, or races.
Maybe as old as time? Complex or simple? Good or bad? It is what we feel. Oh, music! We would be lost without it
